Site: 30,000 sf

Location: Arts District ,Downtown Los Angeles, CA

The aim of the project was to transform and manipulate an already existing long span structure to accommodate a new museum in Downtown Los Angeles. The particular precedent for this project was the Butler frame which was structurally altered to produce spaces of varying area to match the programmatic function it would house. The underlying logic for the programmatic layout was derived from the Basilica typology under the lens of a museum. The roof heights were further manipulated to allow light to enter into the spaces and for ventilation.

Another aspect of the project was an emphasis on the faith facade since the building roof would be visible from the nearby taller buildings. As such the project encapsulates this by mimicking the colors of the iconic LA sunset. Each color palette responds to a particular programmatic function underneath it to establish a division of space.
