MASS TIMBER MID-RISE
(Super Jury Award Winner - Best Drawings) - FALL '19
Site: 45,000 sf
Location: Arts District ,Downtown Los Angeles, CA

The studio was interested in investigating a wood structure building without it having to look like the commonly accepted aesthetic of what a CLT and mass timber building should look like. The aim of the project was to push wood as a structural system while creating hybrids with concrete cores and slab toppings, which is the direction that mass timber is moving towards. This allows the building to be more flexible to suite a wide variety of uses and programs.

The buildings sits on the site to act as an extension of the street providing a continuous line of sight. It also provides an avenue to connect the main street to the back alley promoting movement in the neighbourhood. Sitting on a 20' by 30' grid the building itself is divided into two parts with a bridge that connects them. The larger chunk provides large open uninterrupted co-working spaces to promote interaction, while the smaller chunk is more private meant for meetings. The facade is designed keeping in mind the sun path to allow natural light to flood the spaces while blocking out unnecessary harsh evening light.
